The former Southern Railway Mainline from Norcross, GA to Washington, DC is
the heart of what is today the Piedmont Division of Norfolk Southern. This 619 mile
artery is divided into four districts; The Washington District (Alexander, VA to Lynchburg, VA)
The Danville District (Lynchburg, VA to Linwood, NC) the Charlotte North District
(Linwood, NC to Lyman, SC) and the Charlotte South District (Lyman, SC to Norcross GA).
Piedmont Division dispatch and other functions are based in Greenville, SC., while actual
railroad operations are centered at the hump yard near Spencer NC at Linwood.
The Division is centered around the Charlotte North District.

In this program we revisit the Piedmont Division, Charlotte North District, to watch
the parade of high speed merchandise trains that traverse this vital artery in America’s
railroad system that links the South with the Northeast.

"Oakdale, TN - A Great Place to Watch Trains" 

Oakdale, TN is located on Norfolk Southern's famous subsidiary; the
CNO&TP.This is the 338 mile Cincinnati to Chattanooga mainline,
Norfolk Southern's principle North / South Route.
The CNO&TP has a facinating history dating back to 1869.
The line was built to connect the city of Cincinnati with the South.

The program covers the 25 mile segment from Lancing, TN to Rockland, TN.
Oakdale (M.P. 253) is a crew change point, with a small yard, separating
the Second and Third Districts of the Kentucky Division. Oakdale is also
reguarded as the southern end of the infamous"Rathole".

Double Stack and Manifest trains are documented, along with Auto Rack,
Grain Trains and an amazing solid train of new Caterpillar earthmovers.
There is also a very special locomotive lash-up at the end of the program!

"Charlotte North District Volume One"

The Charlotte North District of the Piedmont Division extends from near Spartanburg, SC
to the big hump yard at Linwood, NC. A distance of 135 miles.

Historically, this is the very heart of the Southern Railway's Atlanta, Ga to Washington,
D.C. mainline. Today, it is a racetrack for priority intermodal and merchandise trains.
It also plays host to Amtrak and North Carolina commuter trains.

R-Line Video documents over 50 trains along the line from Spartanburg, SC to
Spencer, NC.  Included are all types of trains; double-stack, manifest, coal and locals.
Also featured is two office car specials with the restored "tuxedo" executive F-9's.

"Trains (And Some Trolleys) Along the R-Line "

This program captures the action along the Charlotte, NC to Rock Hill, SC portion
of Norfolk Southern's R-Line.

Historically, this railroad was completed in 1852 as the five foot gauge
Charlotte and
South Carolina Railroad
. It was included into the Southern Railway system in 1892.

Today this artery is home to heavy 100 plus car manifest trains loaded with lumber           
and wood chips, scrap, chemicals, grain and coal. We also see a visit from the NS
executive office car train pulled by "F" units as it hauled the annual "Augusta Special"
to the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, GA.

Also included is a brief look at Charlotte's sleek new "Lynx" light rail trains and
stations parallel the NS.

"Piedmont Division - Charlotte to Spencer "


Beginning in the shadows of uptown Charlotte NC, this program follows the ex Southern main
as it twists and turns its way thru the North Carolina countryside.

All NS control points are seen (AT&O, Junker, Haydock, Reid, Salisbury etc) and the old mill
towns of Kannapolis, Concord and Salisbury. Spencer was the half-way point between Atlanta
and Washington and was formerly site of a huge shop complex.

Over 50 trains are documented, including North Carolina Department of Transportation and
Amtrak passenger trains. Also a view of a DPU equipped train crossing the Yadkin River Bridge.
